Abstract:
The radiolysis of dilute aqueous solution of KCN (pH = 10.27) saturated with N2O has been investigated. G(-CN-) value determined by the chemical method is equal to 6.30±0.20,which is consistent with the value 6.47 estimated from the material balance. The yields of the main radiolytic products found, by paper chromatography are as follows.Glycine, G(-CN-) = 0.41; Alanine, G(-CN-) = 0.13; Unknown(Rf= 0.21), G(-CN-) = 0.52; Cyanate, G(-GN-) = 2.60; Formamide, G(-CN-) = 2.30; Carbonate (chemical method), G(-CN-) =0.15.The effect of formate on the yields of the products also has been investigated. The results show that CONH2 and H2CN ( from H atom ) radicals disappear mainly by the following reactions.2CONH2→HCNO+HCONH2 ( 4 )H2CN + CONH2→HCNO+H2CNH ( 5 )Both G (CNO- ) and G ( HCONH2 ) values are 2.30 for the reaction ( 4 )。The contributed G(CNO-) value from the reaction ( 5 ) is 0.30.Kinetic calculation gives a KOH+CN- value of (4.7 ±0.5)×103
